This project investigated and raised awareness on lionfish (Pterois volitans), an exotic and invasive species to the Caribbean Sea, and contributed to its population control by promoting its fishing practices and commercialization.

Awareness & Control

Chefs, cooks and local fishermen were trained by TierrAmar on the lionfish invasion problematic, and awareness was created among consumers and the general public about its threats.

Lionfish fishing tournaments, culinary contests and gastronomic festivals were executed by TierrAmar to promote its fishing practices, commercialization and consumption, as an alternative to the critically endangered grouper.

A market for lionfish was created in Cartagena to control its population.
